hypothyroidism

hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone. the thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck, and its hormones are critical because they regulate metabolism, heart and muscle function, brain development, and maintenance of bones.

symptoms of hypothyroidism can be subtle and may include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, muscle weakness, elevated blood cholesterol, pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints, thinning hair, slowed heart rate, depression, and impaired memory.

hypothyroidism is most commonly caused by hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder. other causes can include thyroid surgery, radiation therapy, and certain medications.

diagnosis is based on symptoms and blood tests measuring thyroid-stimulating hormone (tsh) and thyroxine levels.

treatment usually involves daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine, which restores adequate hormone levels, reversing the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
