meningitis

meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. it can be caused by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. bacterial meningitis is more severe and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

symptoms of meningitis include a sudden high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea or vomiting, confusion or difficulty concentrating, seizures, sleepiness or difficulty waking up, sensitivity to light, and lack of interest in drinking or eating.

bacterial meningitis is diagnosed through a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to analyze cerebrospinal fluid. viral meningitis can be milder and often resolves without specific treatment.

treatment for bacterial meningitis includes intravenous antibiotics and corticosteroids. antiviral medications may be used to treat viral meningitis. early treatment of bacterial meningitis can prevent serious complications.

vaccinations are available for some forms of bacterial meningitis and are an important preventive measure.
