germaphobe howard stern’s first bout of covid-19 was ‘hell’

'can you imagine if we didn’t have the vaccine?'

if you thought howard stern was off on an extra week of vacation, think again.
the siriusxm radio host and notorious germaphobe was off the air last week after he tested positive for the coronavirus for the first time.

“see if we can get through this show,” stern said on his return monday, according to mediaite . “we were supposed to be back last week. we weren’t. because i got covid-19.”

stern has essentially holed himself up in his “apocalypse bunker” (a.k.a. the basement of his southampton estate) since the onset of the pandemic in 2020 and has presumably had multiple vaccinations and boosters, but his luck officially ran out last month.
“covid is really bad,” he told his audience. “you do not want covid. oh, f***.”
while he wasn’t specific about how he may have contracted the virus, he said he “went through hell” with it.
“i’ve really never been this sick,” he explained, and credited those who helped develop vaccines against the virus.
“what a wallop this thing is — can you imagine if we didn’t have the vaccine?”

last year, stern revealed that he and his wife beth often argue over his paranoia about covid .

“i’m going crazy with this,” stern said at the time. “my wife yelled at me last night. we got into a fight.”

he explained, “you know how paranoid i am about getting covid. i haven’t gotten it, and i’m pretty safe, and i really don’t want to get it.”
last fall, the radio personality ventured out “for the first time in two years” to a restaurant where he joined other celebrities including jennifer aniston, jimmy kimmel and jon hamm.
but even his pal bill maher questioned whether he would ever get a chance to see stern again.
“i have a long, storied history, ups and downs with that man, and i find it so sad these days that i can’t see him because of the pandemic,” maher said during his club random podcast last year.
“i don’t think i’ll ever see him again because i don’t think he’ll ever leave the house because he’s very, very … scared of germs.”
