with the holiday season upon us, here’s a look at what’s open and closed in and around calgary on christmas eve, christmas day and boxing day 2023.
city of calgary services
- calgary transit: sunday levels of service are offered on christmas eve, christmas day and boxing day. full details at calgarytransit.com.
- calgary parking authority/impound lot: no payment is required for on-street parkplus spaces on dec. 25 and 26. weekend rates are in effect at all calgary parking authority surface parking lots and parking garages. normal rates are in effect at calgary zoo, telus spark and heritage park. the impound lot is closed on christmas. full details at calgaryparking.com.
- recreation: most facilities are closed on christmas and boxing day. free public skates are offered on boxing day from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at frank mccool, george blundun/optimist, and henry viney/stew hendry arenas. full details at each facility’s website.
- waste, recycling and organics: landfills are closed on christmas eve and christmas day, and are open until 5 p.m. on boxing day. details on the city of calgary’s website. blue, green and black cart collection for single-family homes is unaffected by the holiday.
government of alberta services
- non-urgent provincial government services are closed from christmas until jan. 1, 2023.
- health, safety and security services will operate through the holiday season, including crisis help lines. call 911 in case of a life-threatening emergency.

private retailers and services
many retail businesses and services adjust their opening hours on christmas eve, christmas day and boxing day. grocery stores, pharmacies and shopping centres will typically close early on christmas eve and remain closed christmas day. some coffee shops and restaurants are open for the holiday. many stores are open with special hours on boxing day, although some services remain closed. check with individual businesses.
movie theatres
some cinemas are open on christmas eve and christmas day.
- cineplex and landmark theatres are open dec. 24 and 25.
