damage to a furnace exhaust connection caused a taradale home to become filled with potentially deadly carbon monoxide gas tuesday, sending three people to hospital.
the home was fitted with carbon monoxide alarms but the residents believed the devices were faulty when they went off, the calgary fire department said in a statement tuesday. the devices were replaced but those also sounded warnings, which led the residents to call 911.
firefighters and atco crews were dispatched to the scene.
“residents reported feeling sick for some time,” the fire department said in its statement.
“it was determined that an exhaust connection inside the wall had separated, allowing carbon monoxide to leak into the home every time the furnace turned on.”
carbon monoxide levels of 60 to 70 parts per million were found.
“as a result of this dangerous co accumulation, three residents were taken to hospital,” said calgary fire in the statement.

carbon monoxide is a noxious substance with no colour, smell or taste that is deadly with extended exposure . symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, fatigue and loss of consciousness.
