ottawa was under a freezing rain warning with a wintry mix of snow and ice pellets on tap for tuesday afternoon through to wednesday morning. an environment canada weather advisory said the region should expect five to 10 centimetres of snow, which could be mixed with freezing rain and ice pellets. the weather warning said freezing rain was expected to fall for “several hours” on tuesday evening, ending near midnight, with two to four millimetres of ice expected to build up in some areas.
rain was expected to continue overnight and until noon wednesday.
snowfall accumulation may be limited in some areas, the advisory stated, but “surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow” and may become icy and slippery.
the mercury hovered around 0 c on tuesday morning, and it was expected to stay around that point until wednesday, when the temperatures is forecast to warm up a bit to 4 c before dropping back down to -3 c wednesday night.
winter parking restrictions were in effect in ottawa, meaning a parking ban could be called if the
forecast projects snowfall of seven centimetres or more, to facilitate snow-clearing operations. people with residential parking permits are exempt from parking bans.
