only about one-quarter of those polled said the ndp performance was good or very good, down from more than two-thirds in the survey reported in september 2020.
the reid institute also found declining levels of public support for the handling of health care across the country. “but the drop was starkest in b.c.”
confronted with that decline this week, eby fell back on a well-rehearsed line of defence.
“the demands on our frontline health-care professionals have never been higher,” he told reporters tuesday. “our population growth has never been higher. the rapid aging of our population has never been higher. the demands on health care are profound right now.”
then there was his familiar complaint about “the chronic underfunding of our health-care system for many years,” a weary argument for a government in power going on seven years.
he rattled off several government initiatives, none of them sufficient (by his own admission) to eliminate unacceptable wait times for cancer care.
“i could go on,” said eby, then he did.
“ensuring that every british columbian has access to the health care they need in the communities where they live is a huge priority of our government.”
still, the 27-per-cent approval rating on health care is a long way down from the heady days of 67 per cent in september 2020.
