seventy-five people, all between age 20 and 30, face a total of $135,000 in fines after local and provincial police broke up an illegal gathering in the lanaudière region friday night.
patrollers with the matawinie regional municipality (mrc) and sûreté du québec were called to the scene shortly before midnight, after firefighters responded to a call from a building on du moulin st. in ste-béatrix, 100 kilometres north of montreal, said sq spokesperson audrey-anne bilodeau.
when police arrived, some of the party-goers fled on foot, while others barricaded themselves inside and hid. police officers from matawinie requested backup from police in joliette and st-michel-des-saints and obtained a search warrant.
the 75 people who were ticketed for breaking the ban on gatherings to halt the spread of covid-19 all came from the greater montreal area. police issued 10 charges of not respecting the curfew to people who had fled outside and about 20 charges of violating municipal bylaws like obstructing the work of police officers.
