“it’s okay for me to go the pub, but it’s not okay for others,” he concluded.
rcmp this week announced that highway patrol units will bolster covid-19 travel checkpoints during this victoria day long weekend.
supt. holly turton said road checks on highways 1, 3, 5 and 99 would be extended and others established.
turton said rcmp officers checked 1,412 vehicles during the first weekend of restrictions and one person was turned back.
during the second week (may 14-16) police checked 2,069 vehicles and turned back 30.
“we would like all travellers to know that we will be increasing the number and duration of the road checks leading up to, and through, this long weekend.”
staff sgt. janelle shoihet said in an email that officers have not issued any tickets at the road checks and “we are hopeful that we don’t have to issue any this weekend.”
she said there are many signs and ample time to turn around before reaching the road check, if travellers are on a non-essential trip.
“the goal with the checks is not to issue the tickets but to encourage people to stay within their health regions, unless they are required to travel,” she said.
road check locations will be announced on twitter after they have been set up, she said.
