by: david carriggb.c.’s covid-19 crisis has worsened with a big jump in active cases, in variants of concern and in people in intensive care, while only a small part of the population has been vaccinated.the provincial health officer released figures on monday showing a jump of almost 1,000 active cases of the disease each day over the past few days, with 8,490 people now sick. the number of people in intensive care grew by almost 20 per cent over the same period to 96 as 916 variant cases appeared.henry also reported that while 806,118 people in b.c. had received one of the three available vaccines, only 87,472 had been fully immunized with two shots, or less than two per cent of b.c.’s population.henry’s position is to get as many people one shot of vaccine as possible and to delay as long as possible giving two shots. one shot is proven to be quite effective, though not as effective as two shots, which is considered full vaccination.henry said there had been 1,889 new cases of covid-19 in the past two days, bringing the total of new cases to 3,979 over the past four days. the seven-day average daily case count is growing exponentially. there are 588 active cases of covid-19 variants, or seven per cent of all active cases.she said that 23 people in b.c. had died from covid-19 since april 1, bringing that tally to 1,486.b.c. is in crisis with the arrival in force of the p1 variant, first identified in brazil, that is more contagious and tougher on younger people than the common covid-19 identified in late 2019. the p1 variant has also hit the vancouver canucks, with 21 players and coaches now affected and the team’s season likely derailed.“now is not the time to bend the rules — it’s time for us to work together again to bend the curve,” henry said.
