hallucinations, hair loss, erectile dysfunction may be symptoms of long covid
a new large-scale study from the u.k. identifies several troubling new symptoms of long covid.
for months now, the national institute on ageing has been tracking covid cases in canadian long-term care homes. but they’ve had to pause their work, because provinces are no longer providing the public with the information the institute needs.
“it’s not that we don’t want to continue doing this, and that we wouldn’t be interested in volunteering to do this,” dr. samir sinha, director of health policy research at the institute, told the canadian press. “it’s just impossible to continue doing this task in an accurate and reliable way.”
the fact that this kind of information is no longer accessible to the public is troubling, sinha said : it means governments can get away with being less accountable.
a new study from imperial college london about the covid vaccine’s impact on the menstrual cycle found that a person’s next period after getting vaccinated might be a day or two late. but, generally, its timing would go back to normal by the next cycle.

people taking oral contraception, though, were less likely to experience a change in their menstrual schedule. (as long as they were taking combined contraception, not progesterone-only contraception.) this finding suggests “ that the effect may be mediated by temporary changes to sex hormones,” viki male, one of the study’s authors, wrote in the guardian.
now, of course, the vast majority of us have gotten covid at some point — and the fact that there are now vaccines means it’s much less risky to contract the virus (although the risks definitely do still exist). so it’s less shocking, but still notable when someone famous gets sick. today it’s game of thrones author george r.r. martin, who missed the premiere of its spinoff show house of the dragon after contracting covid at san diego comic con.
