quebec’s vaxicode smartphone application finally became available to android users on monday.
the province’s vaccine passport program is now ready to go for sept. 1, when services deemed non-essential by the government will become accessible only to those who are considered fully vaccinated. the app — to which quebecers can upload their proof of vaccination — became available to apple iphone users last week.
“we are staying the course on sept. 1,” health minister christian dubé wrote on twitter on monday . “it is still possible to take a digital photo of your qr code or to print it. merchants will be able to read these formats.”
though the idea of a vaccine passport has been tossed around for months, most of its details were released within the last few weeks . some quebecers have since reported experiencing issues securing their proof of vaccination, either because they don’t have a smartphone, have experienced long wait times on the government help line, or are concerned they may run into issues because of name variations on their government documents (quebecers must show government-issued id with their proof of vaccination).

tremblay said she knows the phone line experienced long wait times last week, but that she heard it quieted down in the days that followed. quebecers who are not able to download qr codes on their own or who prefer not to use the phone service can also visit any vaccination site to have their proof printed on the spot. they can also visit a centre to test their proof to make sure they don’t run into issues on sept. 1.
