ontario reported 511 new cases of covid-19 on sunday, the fourth day in a row the province’s case count has topped 500.
of the new cases, 408 people were unvaccinated, 59 were partially vaccinated and 111 were fully vaccinated.
toronto was the hot spot, reporting 116 new cases, followed by peel region with 69, york 64 and hamilton 48.
ottawa public health reported 19 new cases, although the number of active cases in the city remained at 129. there are four covid-19 patients in hospital in ottawa, with one person in intensive care.
elsewhere in the region, leeds, grenville & lanark district reported five new cases, the eastern ontario health unit reported two, while there were no new cases reported in renfrew.
there were no new deaths reported sunday in ontario, leaving the total at 9,418.
public health ontario said there were 98 people in hospital, 116 people in intensive care and 71 on ventilators, although phu noted that not all hospitals report their covid-19 data on the weekends.  (the number of icu patients sometimes exceeds the number of covid-19 patients in hospital because the figures for icu and ventilator cases contain some patients who no longer test positive for covid-19 but who are being treated for conditions caused by the virus.)

the new data bring the total number of covid-19 cases in ontario to 555,561, with 542,476 of them considered resolved. the effective reproduction number also climbed to 1.39. the number represents the average number of people each person with covid-19 will infect. a number above 1.0 means the virus is surging.
more than 50,000 vaccinations were administered in ontario on saturday, bringing the provincial total to 20.1 million. more than 71.4 per cent of ontario’s total population has now had at least one dose of vaccine and 64.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.
nationally, 71.4 per cent of all canadians have had at least one vaccine and 61.9 per cent are fully vaccinated. among those 12 and over, 81.5 per have had at least one shot and 70.7 per cent are fully vaccinated.
