ontario reported 740 new cases of covid-19 on sunday, with three-quarters of that among people who are not fully vaccinated. thirty-one of the new cases were in ottawa, according to the province.
people who have not been vaccinated or have only partial immunization accounted for 551 of the new cases, health minister christine elliott said in a tweet sunday morning. some 189 of the new infections were in people who are fully vaccinated.
there are 214 people in hospital with covid-19 and 158 people in intensive care, although not all ontario hospitals report their data on the weekends. the icu numbers include people who are being treated for covid-related illness, but are no longer testing positive.
the effective reproduction number, rt, is 1.16. any number greater than 1.0 indicates the infection is increasing.
more than 20.7 million vaccinations have been administered; 82.4 per cent of the people in the province 12 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine and 76.0 per cent are full immunized.
sunday’s report brings the total number of covid-19 cases in the province since the pandemic began to 564,311, of which 548,959 have been resolved. there were two new deaths reported sunday, raising the provincial total to 9,498.
