doctors who defy “appropriate, professional conduct” remaining unvaccinated, spreading covid-19 misinformation, or both, can expect a formal complaint and the consequences that follow, warns the college of physicians and surgeons of alberta.
”there is a deep concern that those who have chosen not to be vaccinated are contributing to the public health emergency we are in today,” says the monday letter to physicians. “council and cpsa’s leadership team are also very perturbed by a small number of physicians who are spreading misinformation and even prescribing medications when there is no evidence of their benefits in treating covid-19.”
the warning to doctors comes after a sept. 20 cpsa council meeting where it was unanimously accepted that as part of the profession’s social responsibility to protect albertans, all regulated members should be fully vaccinated. the letter was issued the day alberta recorded the highest number of patients, most of them unvaccinated, admitted to alberta intensive care units since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.
“we strongly urge all regulated members to get vaccinated, trust reputable science and provide evidence-based care,” continues the letter, signed by the cpsa council, including its president, royal alexandra hospital emergency room doctor louis francescutti.
