quebec’s public health lab will start screening daily for the delta variant next week as cases of the “fittest covid-19” strain ratchet up across canada and the united states.
“the situation is currently under control in quebec, but with the return to class next fall, there is the possibility of a fourth wave if vaccine coverage is not adequate,” dr. michel roger told the montreal gazette. “it’s possible that the delta variant will take the place (of alpha) and create the fourth wave.”

in the u.s., modelling shows delta accounts for 51.7 per cent of all covid-19 cases in that country, according to the washington post . the variant is being blamed for an increase in hospitalizations in several u.s. states, especially in areas with low vaccination rates. in missouri, one hospital has added a second intensive-care unit to treat patients infected with delta.
