this means that in order to be fully vaccinated by oct. 26, an acute-setting health-care worker would have to have received their first dose of pfizer or moderna vaccine by today at the latest.
henry’s most recent order has been controversial, leading to a rift within the b.c. nurses union.
last monday, on the night of the canadian federal election, b.c. nurses union president christine sorensen abruptly stepped down.
this came two weeks after the union’s vice president told cbc that while the union was encouraging all nurses to get vaccinated it didn’t support the mandatory policy because it could lead to staffing shortages because unvaccinated nurses could not do front-line work.
this statement was made despite the majority of b.c.’s 48,000 nurses being vaccinated and led to online criticism from other nurses in favour of the vaccination mandate.
the canadian nurses association, the canadian medical association, doctors of b.c. and the college of physicians and surgeons of b.c. all support the mandatory vaccine.
