quebec — the plan to launch a vaccination passport in quebec became a political football thursday with opposition parties demanding a full debate in the legislature, including the opportunity to question experts on the science behind the system.

quebec plans to launch the passports on sept. 1. quebecers will need the passport to access non-essential services such as bars, restaurants, outdoor festivals and gyms.
but while the business lobby is in favour because it will boost the economy and help struggling restaurants and bars, human-rights watchdogs have expressed reservations that it could lead to discrimination.

later thursday, Éric duhaime, leader of the right-wing quebec conservative party , went further, marching into the lobby of the legislature with boxes of petitions containing the names of 133,000 quebecers who are opposed to the passport system.
the party started gathering the signatures in april when rumours about the creation of a passport system emerged.
