how adhd affects your child

overview

it is important to learn about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) and the specific ways your child is affected. knowledge about the condition will help you feel more confident in being able to help your child reach his or her potential. the following information can help you begin to understand how this condition may affect your child.

  • your child's brain automatically responds to new sensations or events whether or not it is appropriate. to make the best of this quality, use colourful reminders, books with pictures, and hands-on activities whenever possible.
  • your child focuses on the present and does not learn from past experience. you have to repeatedly and consistently respond to the same misbehaviour until appropriate behaviour is learned. also, comment often on your child's positive behaviour, and he or she will be more likely to repeat that behaviour.
  • your child may feel driven to keep some part of his or her body moving at all times. do not expect or require your child to stand or sit perfectly still, even when being given instructions.
