deadpool may have left vancouver, but that doesn't mean there aren't still 10 reasons to love him

will deadpool and wolverine finally kiss and make up? will taylor swift have a cameo? 10 reasons to get excited about deadpool & wolverine

it’s finally happening: the deadpool & wolverine movie, the third in the deadpool franchise, is opening july 26.

this time, ryan reynolds , a.k.a. deadpool , brings along his real-life pal hugh jackman as the wonderfully ill-natured fellow mutant, wolverine.

there’s not a lot to say about the movie as it has been kept under lock and key in the marvel cinematic universe’s cone of silence. but does that matter? nope. what matters is reynolds is back as the wisecracking, foul-mouthed, sort-of superhero at a time when we all need a good laugh.

here are 10 reasons to get excited about deadpool & wolverine.

deadpool 3 is set to kick superhero movie fatigue in the …

deadpool is just the mutant to rescue what has become a factory of cynical, cash grab offerings with stories thinner than a cartoon villain’s skin. we’re looking at you shazam: fury of the gods, the flash, aquaman and the lost kingdom, ant-man and the wasp: quantumania and the marvels, which fyi is the lowest-grossing mcu movie of all time with just $206 million worldwide.
but the superhero genre isn’t the only one that needs deadpool & wolverine to deliver some much-needed oxygen. according to variety, box office ticket sales are down 17 per cent from last year, and revenues have slipped a whopping 36 per cent from pre-pandemic levels.

it’s do-over time for deadpool and wolverine

the characters faced off 15 years ago in 2009’s x-men origins: wolverine. fans hated the movie, to put it bluntly. but if you want to talk origin stories, that misstep apparently motivated reynolds to do right by deadpool and give him his own movie in 2016. the rest, they say, is history as the us$58 million investment in the film turned into $782 million. and deadpool 2 was even bigger, pulling $785 million globally.

salty talk leads to serious laughs — and r rating

while the house of mouse might be nervous about the r-rated fare, fans are excited for the return of the machine-gun vulgarity of reynolds’ deadpool. to add to the quick-witted, offside action is the dry, surly and incredibly flawed wolverine.
bottom line is this swear-laden success story is not about shock value, but rather character. and reynolds’ unique naughty charm.
“his brain is like a half-eaten omelette inside the skull of a seven-year-old,” reynolds told variety.

not since tony soprano has there been such an engaging anti-hero

sure, batman is dark and broody, but he holds it in. that’s not healthy. deadpool tells you exactly what he’s thinking. and whether you like it or not, it isn’t his f’ing problem, which is great.

speaking of anti-heroes, could taylor swift make a cameo?

is the singer of the hit song anti-hero, taylor swift, going to show up in bff blake lively’s husband’s movie? well, reynolds recently posted on his instagram stories a picture of his character, deadpool, recreating swift’s evermore album artwork. so, there’s that.

we’re short on plot specifics, but love the basic idea

the exact plot remains unclear. it’s marvel, after all. according to the internet, the movie picks up six years after deadpool 2 and wade wilson (a.k.a. deadpool) is no longer a hired gun and is living the quiet life as a used-car salesman.

then, he’s approached by the time variance authority — an organization that monitors the multiverse — and is sent on a mission with wolverine to save deadpool’s home universe. sounds like a buddy road trip movie, right?

deadpool bites the marvel hand that feeds him

while there are many, many times the merc with the mouth has cheekily taken potshots at other members of the mcu, a few stand out for us.
from the first movie deadpool sets his intentions when he visits the x-mansion: “it’s a big house. it’s funny that i only ever see two of you. it’s almost like the studio couldn’t afford another x-man.”
back at the x-mansion for deadpool 2 he says: “i am not x-man material at all. first off, i’m not even a virgin.”
and who could forget him taking aim (pun intended) and targeting (again pun intended) hawkeye in deadpool: “i can’t protect you. with this collar on, my superpower is just unbridled cancer. give me a bow and arrow and i’m basically hawkeye.”

the deadpool & wolverine press tour has been epic and entertaining

stops around the globe have delivered on the excitement and the laughs. jackman and reynolds, friends in real life, know what the crowds want, and it seems it’s a lot of ribbing and ribald chat. this excerpt from an interview in variety along with the film’s director shawn levy sums it up:

“when the conversation shifts to the large splint on jackman’s pinky, the 55-year-old action star insists it’s no big deal. ‘it’s a broken tendon,’ he says. ‘i just need to keep it straight for eight weeks, and it fixes itself.’

“reynolds rolls his eyes and pounces. ‘oh, is that all?’ you can see the wheels turning in his head as deadpool takes over his brain. he looks at levy and whispers, ‘just an unfortunate masturbation incident.’ jackman, overhearing this, snorts and says, ‘i sprained my ankle last time.'”

hometown love for deadpool

the first two movies were shot here in vancouver, and we all loved that. reynolds, who has shot other projects here including the adam project, always sings the praises of his native land , but said this time forces bigger than his megawatt star power prevented the production from landing in hollywood north.

when asked in november why the franchise didn’t return to vancouver to shoot, reynolds said that he “fought like hell to shoot the third deadpool movie here.” but he has a new boss now with disney buying fox, and “they have their infrastructure, and you just have to sort of fall in line. to a certain degree, i understand that, but i miss home.”

reynolds celebrates opening weekend in hometown of vancouver

if you are looking to get a look at reynolds in real life, you will want to get yourself into b.c. place on july 27 for whitecaps fc versus wrexham afc the football team reynolds owns along with fellow actor rob mcelhenney.

if the hit documentary series welcome to wrexham is any indication, reynolds attends matches on occasion. and frankly, cheering on your own sports team in front of an adoring hometown crowd during your huge movie’s opening weekend does kind of seem like an occasion.
