5,000 shots went unused during easter weekend in quebec

despite the no-shows, none of the covid-19 vaccine supply was lost, as doses are prepared 30 minutes before an appointment and "we have very good freezers."

the head of quebec’s vaccination campaign admitted tuesday morning that 5,000 covid-19 vaccination  appointments in montreal went unfilled over the course of the easter weekend.

when asked during an interview with 98.5 fm morning show host paul arcand why eligibility for the unused shots could not be immediately broadened for anyone willing to get it, daniel paré said the final word rests with provincial health authorities.

“on thursday, we were really hoping that people would show up for appointments … the machine was ready,” said paré, adding that there remained 100,000 people 60 and older on the island of montreal who are eligible for vaccinations.
“the priority criteria of the public health authority must be respected, and the criteria now (includes) those under 60 with chronic health problems. we’re waiting for recommendations for what’s next and we should have them sometime this week.”
paré said vaccination authorities had “made the bet” that five per cent of the 100,000 montrealers still eligible for their shot would show up. he said that despite the no-shows, none of the weekend vaccine supply was lost, as doses are prepared half an hour in advance of a confirmed appointment and that “we have very good freezers.”

as the supply of vaccines in quebec increases, eligibility will be extended to other groups, paré said.

about two hours after paré’s interview quebec health minister christian dubé took to twitter to announce that “we’re adjusting our operation. this is normal when we change priority groups. we have delivered 34k doses to the regions. we are adding 20k doses. we are opening (eligibility) to (the) chronically ill (and) essential workers.”

pare’s comments come as eligibility for the vaccine was broadened in the montérégie region to those 60 and over.
