children’s hospital of eastern ontario (cheo) advised visitors to its emergency department monday that they might be asked to wait in some “unusual places” such as their air-conditioned personal vehicles, as the department grappled with “very high” volumes, long wait times and the need to maintain physical distancing.
“thanks for understanding #ottcity!” cheo tweeted shortly after 4 p.m. “our team is doing the best we can to help everyone in need.”
in his own tweet, hospital ceo alex munter noted that the volumes being seen by the emergency department were “unprecedented” for this time of year.
“the majority of cases in our emergency department of late are non-covid related and mostly respiratory illnesses or non-life-threatening injuries etc.,” cheo’s chief communications officer adrienne vienneau told this newspaper, in an email. “critical emergencies are always seen first and quickly. “
more than 80 people were in the emergency department when the public notice was issued, vienneau said. capacity, meanwhile, is 50 people, under current covid-19 restrictions in place at the hospital.
wait times exceeded 10 hours at the busiest point, she said, but had dropped below four hours as of 6 p.m. monday.
