a man with a long criminal record who was caught with a loaded revolver while the quebec government’s covid-19 curfew was in place was sentenced to a six-year prison term on thursday. quebec court judge andré perreault did not agree with the crown’s recommendation of an eight-year sentence for tony lafleur, 49, who has past ties to members of montreal street gangs. he also did not agree with the suggestion from defence lawyer emilie serdakowski that the time lafleur served behind bars since 2021 was difficult and that he suffered two heart attacks while detained. she asked that lafleur be sentenced to a five-year prison term and that, with time served factored in, her client had already served his sentenced.
following a trial, lafleur was convicted of possessing a loaded firearm, obstruction and possessing a firearm while he was subject to a court order prohibiting him from doing so.
prosecutor jean-christofe ardeneus argued lafleur should serve a six-year sentence for possessing the firearm and serve a two-year sentence consecutively for having the gun on him when he was subject to the court order.
perreault decided the sentences should be served consecutively but reduced them to five years and one year. he also sentenced lafleur to serve a one-year term, to be served concurrently, for obstructing the constables when he resisted arrest.

with time served factored into everything, lafleur has a 150-day prison term left as of thursday.
just before 11 p.m. on march 16, 2021, two montreal police constables on a routine patrol noticed a mazda 3 idling in the parking lot of a residential building on d’hérelle st. the headlights were on and the driver’s window was open. the constables could see smoke coming out of the window.
the curfew imposed on quebec by the caq government in an effort to stem the spread of covid-19 in the province was in effect at the time and the constables decided to approach the car. the driver, adama coulibaly, got out of the car as the constables approached. he said he and the two other men in the vehicle had just arrived in the city and they were headed to his home. coulibaly told one of the constables that he didn’t have any means of identification on him and gave the constable a fake name.
when the other constable approached the passenger side of the car he noticed that lafleur, seated in the front passenger seat, appeared nervous, was fidgeting and that he kept touching one of his hands, which was bleeding. while the constable asked lafleur questions, the man in the back seat, guerry julemeus, kept moving side to side and interrupted the constable.

julemeus claimed they had just arrived from quebec city and suggested this explained why they where in violation of the curfew.
coulibaly and julemeus were arrested for cannabis and pills found inside the car, but lafleur refused to exit the mazda 3. he was eventually pulled out and the constables found a blood-stained bag in his coat pocket. the firearm was inside the bag.
