kids who participate in community sports and recreation who celebrate their 12th birthday can now keep playing for up to three months while they receive their covid-19 shots.
the windsor-essex county health unit on wednesday amended the covid-19 vaccine requirements for youth to provide a three-month grace period for those who’ve just turned 12, so they don’t have to stop participating due to the change in vaccine eligibility.
the health unit on oct. 1 implemented a letter of instruction mandating that owners and operators of sports and recreational fitness facilities require proof of double vaccination from anyone entering who is age 12 and older.
“we always try to do better,” said acting medical officer of health dr. shanker nesathurai. “whenever we propagate rules and directions, we try … to be cautious and circumspect about mandates and requirements.”
the health unit is also “constantly receiving feedback and dialogue with the community, and we try to incorporate that in our plan moving forward,” he said.
kids will now have 12 weeks from their 12th birthday to become fully vaccinated against covid-19. during that time, they will be required to provide identification to participate in community sports and recreation activities, but they do not have to provide proof of being fully vaccinated.

once the child reaches the 12-week mark after their birthday, they must provide show proof of vaccination to continue to participate.
“by requiring and verifying proof of vaccination for all people 12 years of age and older accessing these types of indoor facilities, we will greatly reduce the risk of transmission of covid-19 and improve protection from covid-19, limiting its spread amongst young people and their families in windsor-essex,” said dr. nesathurai.
covid-19 case counts are now lower in windsor-essex than they were when the initial letter of instruction was created, “so that also weighs in with the decision” to allow the three-month vaccine grace period for those who’ve just turned 12.
covid-19 vaccines for those younger than 12 have not yet been approved for use in canada.
the local health unit on wednesday reported 30 additional covid infections, including 11 close contacts of confirmed cases, seven cases that were community acquired, three related to outbreaks, and one related to travel.
the sources of transmission for eight cases remain under investigation.
there are currently 190 active covid-19 cases in windsor and essex county. eleven people who have tested positive are in hospital, and five of them are in intensive care.

a new outbreak has been declared at windsor regional hospital ouellette campus on 4 medical. fewer than five patients have been affected, and all of them are asymptomatic, the hospital said.
the first positive case in the hospital outbreak was identified following routine screening. all involved patients were residing in the same wardroom.
admissions to the affected unit continue, however, no visitors will be allowed in outbreak areas.
