with a growing number of covid-19 survivors believing natural immunity will keep them safe, windsor regional hospital is urging people to get vaccinated even if they’ve already been infected.
“the real world data has clearly shown that people who’ve had natural infection are prone to reinfection and potentially dying from their illness,” wassim saad, the hospital’s chief of staff, said wednesday during a board meeting. “and their rate of transmission and infectivity is all the same as somebody who has been unvaccinated. so it doesn’t really help on a population level, even if you think you’re protected individually, you’re actually not. and you’re not protecting anyone else around you.”
hospital ceo david musyj said it’s becoming an increasing problem as more unvaccinated people get infected.
“it seems both on social media and in public debate, people who were infected with covid who don’t want to get vaccinated are becoming a larger voice because they’re populating a larger part of the unvaccinated,” said musyj.
saad said the issue also came up with some of the hospital’s professional staff when the organization’s vaccine mandate took effect.
“the vast majority did end up getting vaccinated after they heard the evidence that we presented to them,” he said. “the important thing is to standardize the response across the board. even if somebody comes with antibody levels, we just don’t know what those mean. i can’t tell you, no one can tell you whether you’re going to be protected for six months, nine months, a year with the covid infection.”
