windsorites tried in vain to keep cool on wednesday as a heat wave forecast to last two days hit the region.
local temperatures soared to 34 celsius wednesday afternoon, with the humidex reaching 45 c and an overnight low staying at 23 c and thursday’s high expected to reach 31 c (37 c with the humidex). cooler temperatures were forecast for shoreline areas.

the high temperatures, along with humidex values in the 40s, prompted environment canada to issue a heat warning for the region. thursday’s uv index, the agency warned, would be “extreme.”

the heat warning also prompted a related special air quality statement caused by increasing ground-level ozone concentrations. individuals may experience coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath as a result of higher levels of air pollution.

extreme heat can have negative health effects. environment canada advises that heat can be especially hard on young children, pregnant women, seniors, people with chronic illness and people who work outdoors.

to mitigate risks of heat illness, people should drink plenty of water, stay in a cool place and keep homes as cool as possible, including by closing curtains and blinds.
