in-person visits to jails cancelled again; saskatoon jail site of largest current outbreak in provincial corrections

as of monday afternoon, 28 staff and 32 inmates at the saskatoon correctional centre had active cases of covid-19.

in-person visits to inmates at saskatchewan’s correctional centres have again been cancelled and new measures around masking have been implemented as an omicron variant-fuelled rise in the community is affecting the provincial jail population.
a total of 106 people — 54 staff and 52 inmates — have active cases of covid-19 as of monday, according to new information provided by the ministry of corrections, policing and public safety.
cases at the saskatoon jail account for the majority of cases: 28 staff and 32 inmates. in regina, five staff and two inmates have active cases, while at the prince albert jail, four staff and 16 inmates are infected.
“pandemic activity in correctional centres is a reflection of what is happening in the larger saskatchewan community. as cases rise in the community, we expect we will see additional cases in our correctional facilities,” the ministry said in an emailed statement.
in addition to measures previously taken to test and screen new admissions, enhance cleaning, vaccinate and mandate masks, the ministry is now mandating double-masking. staff and contractors have to double-mask with a surgical or procedural mask when working inside a facility and inmates have to similarly double-mask outside their cells.

the ministry said staff will also be provided with and encouraged to use take-home rapid tests.

covid-19 outbreaks declared at the jails in regina and saskatoon by the saskatchewan health authority on nov. 14 and dec. 18, respectively, remain on the government of saskatchewan’s outbreak list as of monday.

saskatoon and regina were previously the sites of large outbreaks earlier in the pandemic. since it began, 299 staff and 906 inmates are reported to have recovered from covid-19 infections.
as of monday afternoon, active staff cases were reported at the youth centres, but no cases were reported among their inmates.
