incumbent catherine kitts dominated the results in the orléans south-navan ward monday night.
kitts led late in the night, securing 74.56 per cent of the votes cast. her 7,625 votes put her well ahead of yvette ashiri’s 2,417 (23.64 per cent). the only remaining candidate, shamsa sheikh ahmed, had 184 (1.80).
kitts first won a seat on council in a fall 2020 byelection, taking nearly 55 per cent of the vote. stephen blais won the ward in the 2018 election, but resigned to successfully run for the orléans provincial seat as a member of the ontario liberals.
kitts, a former community newspaper editor turned communications professional, served as vice-chair of the agriculture and rural affairs committee during the last term on council.
ashiri, a public servant and community organizer, finished second to kitts in the 2020 byelection. she sits on several boards in the area and won an endorsement from sen. bernadette clement.
in this newspaper’s 2022 municipal election survey leading up to the election, kitts, in answering what she thought was the ward’s most important issue, said: “orléans south-navan (formerly cumberland ward) is one of the fastest growing communities in ottawa, and we need critical transportation infrastructure. roads are congested and damaged, intersections are failing and yet this is where development is planned. the time is now to resolve the brian coburn extension dispute with the ncc and also build the decades-long promised rapid transit corridor, finally putting to use the $8.5m chapel hill south park and ride. in the rural area, roads have been badly neglected – impacting our farming community and rural small businesses. we must recommit to promises broken after amalgamation, be proud of our agricultural identity and invest in all corners of our city.”
