first shipment of children's medication expected to arrive this weekend: premier smith

approximately 250,000 bottles are expected to arrive in alberta this weekend, but it's unclear when the remaining 4,750,000 will hit shelves

the first shipment of previously announced imported children’s medication is expected to arrive in alberta this weekend, premier danielle smith said tuesday.
speaking at an open-ended media conference in calgary, smith said her government has been working with health canada to ensure a shipment of five million units of children’s pain and fever medication is safe and up to national standards. she said she expects a quarter of a million bottles for alberta health services’ use to arrive in the province this coming weekend.
“there’s a couple of things that we had to do when working through with a new supplier. health canada has to go through and examine the manufacturer, they have to examine our import facilities, we had to make sure that the formulation was the same as we would sell for generic products here, we had to get the french and english packaging approved and we went through all of those different steps,” said smith.

smith and health minister jason copping announced in december they had secured five million units of acetaminophen and ibuprofen from a manufacturer in turkey amid nationwide shortages of children’s tylenol and advil. they said then that there was no exact timeline for when the medicine would arrive but stated it would take at least a few weeks and would be distributed within days of arrival.

the premier said tuesday this weekend’s shipment will be distributed to ahs for use in health-care facilities. shipments for pharmacies and the general public need to undergo further approvals and will be arriving later, she said without providing an exact timeline.
“the remaining (4.75 million) bottles are going to be subject to an additional delay because for retail use, you have to have a childproof cap,” said smith.
meanwhile, smith spoke on a number of other health-care-related initiatives tuesday afternoon stating her government plans to put $600 million into the system per year beginning next year regardless of whether the federal government makes changes to funding transfers or not.
“we’re already intending to put $600 million per year back into the system next year and the following year, and we’re just going to keep on making those kinds of incremental changes,” said smith while referencing policy changes around health care her government has already announced. “i can’t stop doing reform because the federal government doesn’t want to partner with us.”

smith said she has asked the minister of technology and innovation to begin work on creating health spending accounts for albertans, a policy plank the premier touted while running to become the leader of the united conservatives. such accounts would allow albertans to have $300 to pay for health-related costs not covered by the government. those accounts have come under fire from critics, including the official opposition, as a way to have albertans pay for their own health care.
