quebecers united in disapproval of legault's handling of health care, survey suggests

a national poll shows françois legault has a 44-per-cent popularity rating. that number was 52 per cent in march and a dizzying 77 per cent in june 2020.

while his numbers remain respectable, quebec premier françois legault saw his standing plummet by eight percentage points in a national poll conducted to gauge the popularity of provincial premiers.

and the survey suggests that the controversial premier, already beset by criticism over his government’s reform of quebec’s language laws, could also face a broader form of opposition from voters when it comes to the state of the province’s health-care system.

the angus-reid survey published on tuesday shows legault stands at 44 per cent popularity in quebec, compared with 52 per cent in march. in june 2020 and with quebec in the grip of the covid-19 pandemic, legault polled a dizzying 77 per cent approval rating.

broken down along linguistic lines, legault’s approval rating among francophone respondents stands at 53 per cent, a drop of six percentage points compared with march of this year. anglophone respondents meanwhile gave the premier an approval rating of just 13 per cent, a drop of 16 points compared with march.
while the findings for anglophone respondents could be explained by the legault government’s tabling and adoption of bill 96, a reform of quebec’s language law that has drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the province’s linguistic divide, quebecers as a whole appear united in their disapproval of the legault government’s handling of health care.

as they head into a provincial election on oct. 3, 73 per cent of the survey’s 814 quebec respondents found that legault and the coalition avenir québec government are doing “a poor job” on health care.

nationally, nova scotia premier tim houston continued to be the most approved-of premier in the country, garnering 62 per cent approval from respondents in his province, although he polled 73 per cent approval in march.
manitoba premier heather stefanson enjoyed the lowest level of approval, polling 23 per cent from respondents in her province, a drop of two points since march.
the online survey was conducted june 7-13 among a randomized sample of 5,032 canadians who are part of the angus-reid forum. while no margin of error can be assigned to the survey. a sampling similar to that used in quebec would have a margin of error of three percentage points 19 times out of 20.
