restrictions to stall omicron variant come into force on monday

quebec is experiencing a record surge in cases of covid-19 and a rise in hospital admissions.

public-health restrictions quebec premier françois legault announced last week in an attempt to stop the spread of the omicron variant, which has created a record surge in cases of covid-19 and a rise in hospital admissions, come into effect monday.

restaurants, bars, casinos, gyms, theatres, cinemas and convention centres must limit their capacity to 50 per cent. a ban on dancing and karaoke, lifted barely a month ago, is being reimposed.
in stores and shopping malls, a maximum of one customer will be permitted per 20 square metres of floor space — the measure does not apply to establishments offering such personal care as hairdressing or massage therapy, but appointments are necessary.
the 50-per-cent rule also applies to places of worship — to a maximum of 250 people. a vaccination passport is required.
for funerals, the current maximum of 50 people at one time is maintained. wedding ceremonies and funerals without a vaccination passport being needed have been authorized, but only to a maximum of 25 people.
for private indoor gatherings, the limit remains 10 people, or the occupants of three residences.
measures are tightened as of monday in long-term care centres, private residences for seniors and intermediate and family-type living environments for seniors and others who are not fully autonomous, with limits on the numbers of relatives and informal caregivers who can visit. unless they’re helping to feed residents, no visitors will be permitted in common areas.

in schools, mask wearing in classrooms and common areas is once again mandatory. in-person return to class is set for no earlier than jan. 10, 2022, for high schools, cegeps, universities and vocational programs. the scheduled return to classes at the elementary level remains unchanged.
new restrictions come into play in sports and recreation, with tournaments and competitions suspended and a limit of 25 participants in indoor activities.
in workplaces, the wearing of masks at all times and physical distancing of two metres must, once again, be respected. remote work is strongly recommended.

in another action intended to deal with the rise in cases, quebec offers free rapid covid-19 tests — one kit of five tests per person per month — to take home from nearly 2,000 pharmacies as of monday. the quebec association of pharmacy distributors said in a statement sunday more than 200,000 rapid test kits will be available for quebecers age 14 and older.

the provincial government pledged last week to issue free rapid tests to the public and hopes to have more than 800,000 kits distributed by the start of the holiday season. the association announced sunday each pharmacy should receive a case with 108 kits by monday or, for pharmacies in remote regions of the province, by tuesday at the latest. between then and dec. 23, more kits will arrive in quebec and be distributed to all pharmacies, it said in a statement.
