the office of quebec’s ombudsperson has given the ciusss, the regional health authority overseeing santa cabrini hospital, until the end of september to provide a progress report on its efforts to reduce the time patients spend in the emergency room.
the ombudsperson was informed in 2021 that multiple patients were spending four to nine days on stretchers in santa cabrini’s er. quebec health authorities say patients should remain no longer than 24 hours in an er.
a subsequent investigation by the office found that while santa cabrini personnel were trying to improve the situation, their task was complicated by covid-19 and staffing shortages, which led to hospital beds being shut down and creating a traffic jam of patients.
in a report made public on thursday, the office called upon the ciusss to provide an update by april 15 detailing the time between a patient’s being assigned a hospital bed and their actually occupying it. the office also wants to see by sept. 30 a report providing an overview of the situation at the hospital’s er, the length of time spent by patients on a stretcher, the number of er stays longer than 24 hours and the number er stays longer than 48 hours.
