members of canada’s largest muslim youth group hit the streets of windsor this week, armed with pizza and searching for hungry and lonely people.  “this is the teachings of islam,” spokesman hassaan shahid told the star. “we’re taught by the prophet muhammad, peace be upon him, to serve the community and serve those who are less fortunate.”
for several years now, members of the ahmadiyya muslim youth association have fanned out across canadian cities for holiday dinner on wheels, offering meals for people in need.
“this is particularly important at this time of year, when a lot of people are facing loneliness,” said shahid. “with that in mind, we’re undertaking this nationwide initiative.”
ahmadiyya muslim youth association has thousands of members across canada, including about 120 in windsor. youth group members donate all the money to pay for the meals they give out.
on monday, members in windsor ordered enough pizzas for about 100 people. they had planned to go in search of homeless encampments and people on the streets, giving out pizza to whoever they found.
but luqman ejaz, a regional youth coordinator with the group, said it was difficult to find people on a rainy day. so they switched gears, dropping off food at street help windsor and the downtown mission.

holiday dinner on wheels is one of several charitable initiatives the youth group does on a regular basis, including food drives and blood drives.
ejaz said the group tries to do something every month in windsor. they plan to bring meals to the downtown mission next month.
he said the group also organizes an ongoing food drive for the mission, with volunteers setting up tables at different grocery stores.
if you can’t find the group at your local grocery store, you can call ejaz at 519-991-0274 to donate.
