a stranger’s disturbing recent visit to a palliative care room at hotel-dieu grace healthcare occurred following a widely publicized wedding featuring the victimized family on hospital grounds, so no safety policy changes have been required, said the hospital’s ceo.
bubba christopher michael pollock, 34, of london, was arrested last week shortly after gaining access and taking a selfie inside the room of a palliative care patient at the hospital’s emara building.
the known pride protester had previously been involved in social media arguments with a windsor woman, 36-year-old britt leroux, a vocal supporter of the pride community. it was her father’s palliative care room at the hospital where pollock took the disturbing selfie photo.
pollock has since been charged with criminal harassment following an investigation by the windsor police service.
with 250 security cameras in place and an in-house team of 43 security staff, hotel-dieu grace healthcare has sufficient policies and capabilities to protect patients, so no changes are needed following the incident, said bill marra, the hospital’s ceo.
“this situation involved unique circumstances,” he said. “the daughter and son-in-law were recently married on our campus so that the father was also able to attend.

“there was a television news item of the event and it was also widely posted on social media — including information of the father being in palliative care at our hospital.
“social media exposed information on this family. if anything, maybe there is a good lesson learned here.”

the hospital has long offered to any patient or family sufficient security protections and safety plans, including full lockdowns and prohibiting any visitors if requested, he said.
“the more a family communicates with us, the better we can develop safety plans for them,” marra said. “sometimes, there might be family dynamics that provoke issues.
“we honour any request to restrict visitors. they can provide us with names of who is allowed or not.
“our operations manager and security staff will develop a safety plan for them.”
aside from the many security cameras inside and outside every building being monitored around the clock by security staff through a control centre, every hospital employee and volunteer carries an alert button on their badge which can be utilized for an immediate emergency response, he said.
roughly five years ago, hotel-dieu grace on windsor’s west side also switched from utilizing outsourced security employees to having its own in-house security staff.

“we have been able to recruit and maintain our own highly qualified individuals who are trained to deal with visitors,” marra said. “we also have action plans in place for any patients who may be acting out.”
when the pollock incident occurred, security video was readily available of his movements throughout the hospital grounds that enabled windsor police to act quickly, leading to his arrest.
marra said the leroux family has since created a safety plan and been happy with the hospital’s response to the issue, and the police action taken.
“when having a loved one in the hospital we encourage people to be mindful of the information they share on social media,” marra said. “all it takes is a google search to find that information.
“our safety policies have served us well. when someone wants privacy we can certainly provide that for them.”
