uwindsor president robert gordon returns from sick leave

but news of his departure came soon after highly public...

university of windsor president robert gordon has returned to work following a one-month medical leave.  

the university confirmed to the windsor star on friday that gordon returned to work at the end of august.  

uwindsor announced july 24 that gordon was going on leave for “approximately one month.” prof. emeritus bruce tucker, who retired in 2015 but remains a member of the university’s board of governors, took on the role of interim president in gordon’s absence.  

uwindsor did not provide a reason for gordon’s temporary leave.  

but news of his departure came soon after highly publicized and contentious events at uwindsor. those included the budgetary decision to kill the university players drama production program after 65 years, to save about $580,000 in the midst of a $5.6-million budget shortfall. 

the university also made national news in july, and was heavily criticized, over a controversial agreement made with pro-palestinian demonstrators that led to a campus protest camp being dismantled.  

gordon began his first term as president and vice-chancellor of the university of windsor on sept. 1, 2019. that term runs until aug. 1, 2025, but th e university announced in may that its board of governors had re-elected gordon to serve a second six-year term.

at the time, board chair helga reidel said the decision was based on the academic institution’s progress under gordon’s leadership over the previous five years.   

reidel said that progress included uwindsor achieving its highest-ever rankings in several global assessments, as well as numerous forward strides in research, innovation and collaborative partnerships. gordon also spearheaded the development of the university’s first strategic plan in a decade.
