the youth singers of calgary are looking to raise up to $80,000 to replace the leaking roof of their performing arts centre as part of their “no more singing in the rain” campaign.
the atco performing arts centre, located in the southeast’s manchester industrial area, is home to ysc and many other local and visiting arts groups, providing performance studios, rehearsal spaces and offices for over 500 performers, artists and arts professionals.
megan emmett, ceo of youth singers of calgary, says she is grateful for any help to address the leaking roof, whether it is in-kind or monetary donations.
“the youth singers of calgary are deeply moved by the generosity of those who rally behind us in our time of need,” she said.
“we implore the community to stand with us as we strive to preserve a space that holds immeasurable value to performers, artists and visitors alike.
“together, let us ensure that this beloved venue continues to serve as a place of inspiration and creativity for generations to come.”
through a government of alberta crowdfunding campaign, donations made through the online portal by august 22 will be matched by up to $5,000. ysc is seeking to raise $80,000 of the $600,000 necessary to replace the roof, helping to ensure ysc’s ability to continue delivering exceptional arts programming.

shirley penner, chief development officer at ysc, founded the group back in 1985 with a mission to provide an inclusive and engaged community where people have an opportunity to grow and express themselves through performing arts.
the non-profit organization also offers programs for children through to adults with professionally trained instructors leading all courses, starting with a foundation of choral music and then gradually adding movement and choreography to help with students’ confidence in their performance skills.
