power was cut sunday to hydro-québec customers in several sections of longueuil as énergir crews worked to repair a major natural gas leak reported at about 9:15 a.m. on taschereau blvd. in the coteau-rouge rd. area, said longueuil police spokesperson françois boucher.
the power cut was authorized by the longueuil fire department as a preventive measure. initially, thousands of customers in a large sector of the south shore community were affected as énergir crews worked to locate the site of the gas leak. once it was found, power was restored to most residents. by 2:30 p.m., the number of hydro customers in longueuil without power was down to 473.
traffic on taschereau was closed in both directions all morning and reopened at about 12:30 p.m. in the brossard direction, boucher said. traffic on taschereau between curé-poirier blvd. w. and the jacques-cartier bridge remained closed.
crews were still working in two areas on sunday afternoon to stop the gas leak, said énergir spokesperson lambert gosselin. the plan was to pinch the gas line upstream and downstream of the leak and then to repair the line, he said. teams are expected to work through the night in the hope that the repair will be complete in time for traffic to resume in both directions by monday morning.
