the alberta government says it is reviewing the health canada decision to approve covid-19 boosters for 5 to 11 year olds but no decision has been made yet on when boosters will be available in the province.
last week health canada authorized a booster dose of the pfizer-biontech vaccine for children as young as five. the national advisory committee on immunization also issued a recommendation that children with underlying health conditions should be offered a booster no earlier than six months after their second dose and that all other children in that age group may also be offered a booster.
charity wallace, spokesperson for alberta health, said in a statement that once a decision has been made regarding boosters, the specific details around timing and availability will be shared publicly.

“as with all pediatric vaccines, parents and guardians are encouraged to seek out reliable and factual information to inform their decisions on vaccines for their children,” she said pointing to the alberta government’s website .

according to the most recent public data, about half of eligible albertans between five and 11 have one dose of a covid-19 vaccine.

on friday, chief public health officer of canada dr. theresa tam said the distinction between naci’s recommendation for high-risk children and all other children — that high-risk kids “should” be offered one and others “may” be offered one — could change as more information is gathered.

“for all other children, the risk of severe outcomes is generally rare,” she said. “i think giving people the choice and providing parents and kids with the information about the effectiveness of the vaccine and the importance of the booster can help them make this choice.”
at an unrelated press conference wednesday, ndp mla irfan sabir said booster shots are top of mind for many parents in alberta.
“now that the covid booster shot is available, i think government should take all steps needed and necessary to make sure that it’s available to the parents across this province,” he said.
