workers at lcbo stores across the province could potentially be on strike as early as next week.
while talks between the liquor retailer and ontario public service employees union (opseu) continue on a new contract, approximately 10,000 employees will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on july 5.
in mid-june, union members voted 97% in favour of a strike.

“lcbo’s focus remains on achieving a deal that is fair to bargaining unit employees and helps the lcbo continue to operate effectively and efficiently for ontario in a new marketplace,” the alcohol retailer said in a statement thursday .

“we also have an obligation to be ready for any potential strike action and remain committed to providing the best service we can during this time.”
however, the lcbo says it will not be business as usual in the event of a strike.
if union workers walk off the job, the lcbo says it will close all retail locations for 14 days as it prepares to transition to a new operations model.
following the closure, the lcbo says it will reopen all locations on july 19 with limited hours and a reduced operating week — friday, saturday and sunday.

the union says it has presented proposals at the bargaining table that would modernize alcohol sales, increase convenience, protect good jobs, and allow the province to keep investing the lcbo’s revenues.

“lcbo workers don’t want a dry summer, we love how busy it is and being a part of ontarians’ celebrations,” said opseu liquor board employees division bargaining team chair colleen macleod recently.
“but we can’t stand by while doug ford gives away the lcbo’s revenues to big box and convenience chain ceos. it’s on premier ford and the lcbo to make sure that public services and good jobs don’t get left behind.”
earlier this week, the lcbo extended store hours across the province in anticipation of a strike and suggested customers shop early and stock up on their products ahead of a potential strike.
