two ontario children under the age of six have died this week with covid-19.
toronto public health confirmed on thursday that a child under the age of four had died with covid-19. no further details were released.
children under five are not eligible for vaccination.
toronto medical officer of health eileen de villa reiterated the importance of vaccines for those who are around infants and children.
“when we see children seriously ill and hospitalized it is a concern,” she said thursday. “those eligible to get vaccinated need to do so to reduce transmission and protect everyone else.
“the best protection we can offer is for those of us who can, to get vaccinated.”

on sunday, ava-mae abram, 5, tested positive for covid-19 and died the next day, according to a gofundme campaign created by a friend of the girl’s mother.

ava-mae was the “sweetest five-year-old girl. she loved animals especially horses and puppies. she loved to dance, sing and play with lego,” wrote courtney scott, of niagara falls.
ontario ndp leader andrea horwath tweeted, “ava-mae should be with us today. my heart breaks for her, her family and loved ones facing this unimaginable loss. please keep them close to your heart.”

ontario has reported nine deaths with covid-19 in people aged 19 or younger but names are not released.

public health ontario data shows 38 children in the five-and-under age category were hospitalized with covid over the past few weeks.

for the last quarter of 2021, children 5-11 reported the highest covid case rate in the province. vaccinations in that age group began in november and 44% now have a first dose.

six babies under a year old have been hospitalized for covid infections in the last three weeks in ontario, according to a joint press release from sick children’s hospital in toronto, mcmaster children’s hospital, the children’s hospital of eastern ontario and kingston health sciences centre.
