to prevent mosquito bites, the local health unit encourages residents to use insect repellents

windsor-essex has recorded its first sign of west nile virus of the year.
on thursday, the local health unit announced routine monitoring for the virus has identified one positive mosquito pool.
no human cases of west nile virus have been identified in the region so far this trapping season, however the mosquito pool indicates the virus is in the community.
“windsor and essex county residents should continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes,” said medical officer of health dr. wajid ahmed in a written statement. “this is an important reminder for everyone to remove standing water around our homes and workplaces to prevent mosquito breeding and protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites.”
to prevent mosquito bites, the health unit encourages residents to use insect repellents containing deet, icaridin, or other approved ingredients on clothing and exposed skin.
wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat when outdoors. light coloured clothing is best, as mosquitoes tend to be attracted to dark colours.
limit the time you spend outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active, and remove any standing water from bird baths, buckets, old tires, pet water dishes, and gutters.

finally, make sure that door and window screens fit securely and are free of holes.
if you see standing water in the community — where mosquitoes lay eggs and larvae develop — call 311 or local by-law enforcement to report it.
the windsor-essex county health unit, along with each area municipality, monitors for west nile virus activity.
