b.c.’s vaccination program enters a new phase monday, as the province opens appointments for the second dose of the astrazeneca covid-19 vaccine. here’s what you need to know:

what shot will i get?

according to the ministry of health , people who received pfizer for their first shot will receive pfizer again. those who received moderna for their first shot will get either pfizer or moderna. both the pfizer and moderna mrna vaccines are effectively interchangeable and are safe to mix.

people who received astrazeneca for their first shot will have to decide between a second dose of astrazeneca and getting pfizer or moderna instead. those who want pfizer or moderna will need to register with the provincial registration system then wait for a booking invitation.

should i mix vaccines? are there any benefits?

in a press conference on june 4, dr. henry said a “basic principle” of vaccination is that the second dose should be the same as the first but acknowledged some people were worried about the rare risks with astrazeneca.
“for some people that very rare risk of blood clots is a very concerning thing,” she said, adding that the risk was “considerably less” with the second shot than with the first.

dr. henry also said a recent u.k. study found that people who had a different vaccine for the second dose were “more likely to have a bit more of a side-effect.”
additionally, some “limited information” indicated that astrazeneca may provide some advantage for “longer term protection” against the virus, when compared to pfizer or moderna, she said.

when exactly will i be able to book an appointment?

the schedule for booking second shots will be similar to the first, with the initial round of invitations going to people who received their first shot in march or april. after that, invitations will go out approximately eight weeks after the first dose was administered.
for those looking to get a second dose of astrazeneca, the process varies, depending on where you received your first shot.
if you were vaccinated at a pharmacy or through your work, your pharmacy or employer will be in contact to book a second dose appointment. no action is required.
pharmacy bookings run june 7 to 20 for those vaccinated in the first half of april and june 21 to july 5 for those vaccinated in the second half of the month. for those vaccinated after april 27, bookings will start july 6.
if you were given your first dose at a community, neighbourhood or pop-up clinic, more information will be available june 14.
