an activist lawyer with the innocence project is accused of having sex with a killer and offering the jailbird millions for bogus testimony that would spring another accused murderer.

according to the san francisco standard , barrister paige kaneb — the legal director of the northern california innocence project — is accused of conspiring with fellow mouthpiece terry gross to convince marritte funches to incriminate himself.

it was allegedly all part of a gambit to overturn the murder conviction of maurice caldwell.
the accused seductive shyster allegedly promised funches half of the dough their client won in a 2021 civil suit against san francisco.
but the catch was he had to confess that he murdered judy acosta in 1990 and testify caldwell was innocent. the wheeling and dealing was captured in taped conversations — as kaneb had sex with funches.
now, the standard reports that funches claims he never received his half of the $8-million payday and is suing the two lawyers.
funches claims in his suit that gross and kaneb visited him in 2015 at the colorado prison where he was serving a life sentence for a 1990 las vegas murder. they asked him to plead guilty in the acosta murder.

and don’t mention the sex romps with the prison cell seductress. kaneb told the jailbird she could lose her licence because she was being accused of “inappropriate behaviour” with funches, and promised him half of caldwell’s money.

text messages obtained by the standard show caldwell also agreed to the terms.
he texted: “my lawyers … never said nothing.”
funches fired back: “we made a f***ing deal.” caldwell replied that his attorneys made the promise without his knowledge and he was informed after the fact.”

caldwell maintained he knew nothing of the deal: “terry and them did some snake s***and involved paige in that s***.”
the two embattled lawyers have denied any wrongdoing. kaneb also accused funches of trying to extort $2 million from her in exchange for his silence about their sex romps.
the san francisco chronicle obtained an email from funches to kaneb: “i recorded every phone call, kept every text. and copies of every video. you can try to clean it up. but you’ll never practice law again. your career is done.”
he followed through on the threat and released the alleged jailhouse lovers’ correspondence. in 2023, the pair exchanged more than 9,000 messages.

kaneb wrote in one missive: “i still remember in that first visit you were looking at (ncip founder linda starr) the whole time and i took my hair out. i wanted you to look at me — i’ve never admitted that before.
“i remember when she left for a few minutes. it was like my chest would explode. and we began talking.”

funches and kaneb were in a sexual relationship in 2023 and 2024.
last july, she wrote: “i’m sorry things fell apart and that it had such a negative effect on you. i never wanted that.”
funches replied: “i love you. i always have. never stopped. always will.”
besides the pulse-pounding texts, kaneb also delivered racy photos of herself in a sarong.
she had gone public about the sexual affair, long after caldwell’s release.
“she pretended to take a personal interest in me. we began a romantic relationship,” funches told the standard. “it was the art of seduction at its finest. all to get me to finally help mr. caldwell.”
kaneb is being investigated by both the innocence project and the california bar.
