savannah thompson has launched a lawsuit against a hospital in walnut creek, california after she was charged over us$6,000 for a urine test.
she says she was shown the bill on june 14 by the john muir medical center after having her urine tested in the e.r. because she thought the cocaine she ingested was laced with fentanyl, reports the dailymail.com.
medicaid says it should cost no more than around $90 for a urine test.
thompson, who entered the hospital around midnight, was also treated with the overdose reversing drug naloxone, given fluids, took an electrocardiogram test and provided a blood sample.
the mercury news, which looked at her lawsuit, said her total bill was more than $13,000 with insurance covering more than $6,000.
she still has $7,100 left to pay but thompson says she can’t afford that amount.
her lawsuit seeking to have john muir health lower the price to a “fair value” and she hopes to become part of a class-action suit to pay back previous patients any money they were overcharged.
the california health department says the hospital had been charging an “unconscionable” amount of more than $5,000 since 2018 with the price going up in the last four years.
the lawsuit says thompson had to sign a contract agreeing to the hospital’s “regular rate and terms” before she got treatment.
