australian supermodel elle macpherson may be known for her record number of appearances on the cover of sports illustrated in the 1980s, but these days, she is all about the benefits of the “alkaline diet,” which she credits for maintaining her youth and vitality into her 50s. macpherson claims that, after just two weeks, the alkaline diet cleared her skin and made it look “ tighter, dewier and plumper ,” helped her lose weight, improved digestion, made her feel emotionally balanced, and curbed her sugar cravings.
in fact, the diet has little to do with whether or not a food is considered “acidic,” and more to do with the theoretical effect it has on our bodies after metabolism. for example, lemons which you might consider to be acidic are actually considered an alkaline food, while the foods most commonly identified as acidic include red meat, dairy, and sugary and processed foods.
