david staples’ commentary titled “worst winter ever’ for alberta health care” published on nov. 4, 2022, shone a light on the “terrible habits that lead to chronic disease” plaguing canadians and our currently fragile health-care system.
apple schools is a proven health-promotion project that supports change. the organization has a long, proven track record of improving those “terrible habits” that lead to chronic illness, and ample scientific research demonstrating that kids in apple school communities move more, eat better, and have fewer mental-health visits to doctors.
since 2007, apple schools has invested over $25 million in students to prevent chronic diseases related to childhood obesity. it is estimated this investment will save our health-care system over $215 million in future costs, through avoided future health-care costs, improved academic achievement, enhanced mental well-being, and improved quality of life.
