forecasts of the impending increase in disease and malnutrition point to the vulnerability of children in particular. the world food program predicts that 10 million more children will suffer from acute malnutrition this year. unicef forecasts that the immunization of 80 million children will be disrupted. calculations published in lancet global health indicate that disruptions in health care and food security may kill up to a quarter million children in just six months. the united nations estimates that even if the world economy rebounds in the second half of the year, the recession will erase several years of progress in the fight against child mortality in the developing world. compounded over the coming decade, this would mean the loss of millions of lives among the world’s most vulnerable. a longer global economic depression would of course be even deadlier.
