in north america alone, the numbers are staggering; three out of four suicides are by men, and it remains the second leading cause of death for men under the age of 44. globally, on average one man dies by suicide every minute of every day – that’s over 500,000 men each year. suicide is an issue that is incredibly complex, however, studies show that by improving overall mental health and by helping men establish better social connections, we can reduce the risk of suicide in men.
for the last seven-year, movember has focused on doing just that; uniting experts, funding bold new approaches and embracing fresh perspectives. in 2020, movember launched a global survey with results indicating that nearly a quarter of men globally (23 percent) reported their mental health had worsened in the first six weeks of the covid-19 pandemic, while almost a third of men (30 percent) noted increased feelings of loneliness. movember is hoping to change this by implementing programs and projects all around the world that are aimed at encouraging men to be more open, honest and help them to build and maintain stronger, long-lasting relationships.
