connor bedard caps record-breaking night with classic ot goal

regina pats centre connor bedard scored a record-breaking goal early in monday's world junior quarter-final matchup with slovakia.

connor bedard set three records with one shot on monday — and that was just for starters.

by scoring at 6:07 of the first period, the regina pats centre set canadian all-time records for goals and points at the world junior hockey championship in halifax. he also broke canada’s record for points in a single tournament.

and he capped a two-goal, one-assist performance by scoring one for the highlight reels at 5:17 of overtime to give canada a 4-3 overtime victory over slovakia and a berth in a wednesday semi-final against the united states (5:30 p.m., tsn, cjme).
“who else would you want with the puck on their stick on three-on-three,” canadian head coach dennis williams told tsn on monday night.

entering monday’s quarter-final, the 17-year-old bedard had been tied with ex-pat jordan eberle (14 goals) and hockey hall of famer eric lindros (31 points).

bedard assisted on a second-period goal by dylan guenther, who gave canada a 2-0 lead. the helper gave bedard the most assists (13) by a canadian at a world junior tournament. jason allison set the previous record of 12 in 1995.
the canadian squad led 3-2 after two periods, but slovakia scored the lone third-period goal — by libor nemec at 11:25 of the third period — to force sudden-death play. bedard took it from there.

bedard now has 21 points in five games at the 2023 tournament. the previous canadian record of 18 was set by dale mccourt (in 1977) and tied by brayden schenn (2011).
canada outshot slovakia 57-27 on monday, only to be frequently foiled by goaltender adam gajan.
the canadian team hit five goal posts — including one by bedard with 42 seconds left in regulation time.
on the winner, bedard deked out two slovakian skates before beating gajan with a backhand move.
in monday’s other quarter-finals, it was: united states 11, germany 1; czechia 9, switzerland 1; and, sweden 3, finland 2.
the pats’ stanislav svozil had two assists for czechia, for which he is the captain.
the gold-medal game is on thursday.
