regina pats forward braxton whitehead was thrilled to announce last week on social media he had a commitment with arizona state university to continue playing hockey after he completes his final year of eligibility in the 20-and-under western hockey league.
that restriction has forced young hockey players to decide whether they will pursue a chl career or attend an ncaa school, which often follows a season or two spent in junior a leagues such as the saskatchewan junior hockey league . a drastic opening of ncaa regulations could damage canada’s junior a leagues.

“right now there are reasons young players have to choose a path,” said pats general manager alan millar , who praised whitehead for his pursuit and handling of an opportunity to continue his hockey career. “if there are no eligibility issues in the ncaa, then young players are going to want to play at the highest level. the highest level is the canadian hockey league. and the more opportunities our players have when they graduate from our league, that’s great.
